UPDATE: September 7, 2017

Hurricane Relief Collection Dates Extended

We continue to  thank you for the concern and the prayers you have already been offering for those affected by Hurricane Harvey. Unfortunately we add to this prayer list all those who have been in the path of Hurricane Irma, as well as those who are yet to face it. Please continue to pray for the first responders, those whose homes are destroyed or damaged, and those whose lives will never be the same. Also pray for the congregations on the front lines as they respond to the current needs and the needs that will be there for months and years to come.

Cokesbury will continue to be a collection site for Hurricane Harvey AND Hurricane Irma Disaster Response. Because of the development of multiple storms, the Conference Disaster Relief Office has extended the deadline for receiving relief items. At this point, the items being collected remain the same, and are posted on our website. Please read our website HERE for all the information.

We do need volunteers for next week, so if you are a church member and would like to volunteer at our collection site, please contact Frances Wilkinson at 850-712-8762. Please note that during these shifts, items may or may not come in, so please feel free to bring some reading material with you. We know that it is a sacrifice to give up your time to sit in the Atrium and wait for supplies to arrive. We so appreciate your willingness to be there and your patience as items do arrive. We want to be sure that we are fully staffed with volunteers during posted hours so that we can offer extra help to those dropping off items.

We will be collecting items through September 18.

Cokesbury will be open to receive donations during these hours:

Monday, September 11 through Friday, September 15 from 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Sunday, September 17 from 8:00 AM – 1:00 PM

Monday, September 18 from 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Cokesbury Church, UMCOR Collection Site

We thank you for your concern and the prayers you have already been offering for the people of Texas as they experience the destruction of Hurricane Harvey and its aftermath. Please continue to pray for the first responders, those whose homes are destroyed or damaged, and those whose lives will never be the same. Also pray for the congregations on the front lines as they respond to the current needs and the needs that will be there for months and years to come.

The next best way to help is to provide financial contributions which can be used to purchase appropriate and needed items quickly and locally. You can donate directly online to UMCOR by clicking here. Your church can also send donations to the Fiscal Office, 4719 Woodmere Blvd., Montgomery, AL 36106. Note “UMCOR 901670” in the memo line. If you prefer donations be sent directly to the affected annual conferences in Texas instead, send those to the same address above with “Hurricane Harvey – Texas Disaster Response” in the memo line.

The Disaster Response Warehouse in Decatur is asking for these donations:

  • Box fans
  • 25′ heavy-duty 14-gauge extension cords
  • 2 gallon garden sprayers
  • flat billed shovels
  • rakes with 3″ tines

We are also collecting UMCOR Cleaning Buckets (flood buckets) and Hygiene Kits (health kits). Assembly instructions can be found here. Please follow the instructions carefully.

We will be collecting these items through September 10.

Cokesbury Church is a current collection point.  Cokesbury will be open to receive donations during these hours:

Wednesday, August 30, through Friday, September 1 from 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Sunday, September 3, 8:00 AM – 1:00 PM

Tuesday, September 5, through Friday, September 8 from 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Sunday, September 10, 8:00 AM – 1:00 PM

The conference disaster relief office also needs help with transporting items from various locations to the disaster warehouse in Decatur, AL, or Sager Brown Depot in Baldwin, LA. If you can offer such assistance with a truck/trailer and/or as a driver, please contact Susan Hunt at susan@awfumc.org.

Once the waters recede and invitations from the affected conferences have been extended, we will provide more information about how teams can volunteer on the ground. Please do not self-deploy until we provide additional instructions.

We are already in conversation with the leadership of UMCOR and other conferences’ disaster response leadership teams. They have requested our conference shower trailer and we will be deploying that soon. Thank you for your previous donations which have made this shower trailer and its use possible. We are glad to be able to assist the people in Texas this way.
